What's is the best way for regularly refueling a locomotive with Uranium Power Cells, etc.
I have already created a single station connected with a requester crate along with queue areas to accommodate traffic. However the trains are visiting too often for it to be effective over time

I have not tried this with the nuclear rocket fuel. I am doing this with regular rocket fuel.

All of my train station depots are either “pick up” or “drop off” - from the mines, to the smelters, to the science packs, everything has one or both of those types of train depots. I picked the drop off type of depots to have a Train Fuel Drop Off station (so my Green Circuits area would have a Construction Train train station, a couple Iron Plate train stations, a couple Copper Plate train stations, and a Train Fuel Drop Off station, on the drop off side, and the Green Circuits pickup train station on the finished product side). The Train Fuel Drop Off station deposits the rocket fuel to a bunch of chests, and from there, it gets sent to each locomotive that visits the other drop off stations. When the actual unloading chest contents get low on rocket fuel, the Rocket Fuel Drop Off station turns on and another train load of rocket fuel gets delivered.

This should work with nuclear rocket fuel as well. Though as I said, I have not tried it with that fuel. It works quite well with solid fuel and rocket fuel, however.

There are two common ways of doing this:

1) You can deliver fuel to your most frequently used stations, then refuel trains when they go to those stations during regular routes.

2) You ca n use a logistics type of train network, like the vanilla Haphollas or the LTN mod. In those kinds of networks trains sit at depots (similar to central stackers) and only go do a delivery job when needed, resulting in less overall rail traffic. In this case the depot is the perfect place to refuel trains.

for me it depends on what station they are going to/coming from and what they are doing.
nuke fuel is pretty hard to get around because of the 1 unit/stack its more efficient (space wise) to cart around a stack of rocket fuel and a stack of uranium and produce it where you need it.

for my wall train I have a central production area for the trains and I devote a slot or 2 for fuel that is taken at each train stop and moved to a requester chest. the energy value is so large with nuke fuel that even one slot will fill every stop eventually until it takes more than one unit to get from one corner of my factory to the next.

I guess it depends on what kind of efficiency you want to achieve.
for time id say every stop gets a refuel section
for cost then a central fuel station
for space then 2 slots one for rocket and one for uranium input/output governed by networks
for cost then either a devoted train station for refueling or a devoted train to disseminate fuel to each station

I use a dedicated train (LCCCC) that carries nuclear fuel cells from main base to each outpost in turn. Logistic bots then deliver fuel to requester chests at every station.

FAQs

Automatically Refueling a Locomotive? ›

A flatcar with two bulk diesel fuel tanks, one of which has a pumping module underneath, is connected to the diesel locomotive(s), providing constant in-transit refuelling of the locomotives. It is a revolutionary fuelling system that continuously refuels the locomotive day tanks during long haul operations.

How many miles per gallon does a locomotive get? ›

Thanks in part to these technologies, U.S. freight railroads can, on average, move one ton of freight nearly 500 miles per gallon of fuel, making rail the most fuel-efficient way to move freight over land.

How long does it take to refuel a diesel locomotive? ›

A diesel engine can be fueled from a pump in 10 minutes or so. Steam Engine 1536 is a Mikado 2-8-2 locomotive. The Illinois Central Railroad Engine 1536, a 2-8-2 Mikado locomotive, is refueled in Carbondale, Illinois. Loading of coal and water and incidental maintenance takes a steam locomotive about 1 hour.

How many gallons of diesel does a locomotive hold? ›

Fuel Tank. This huge tank in the underbelly of the locomotive holds up to 5,500 gallons (20,820 liters) of diesel fuel, plus an additional 300 gallons (1,135 liters) of coolant, and 250 gallons (946 liters) of engine oil.

How do trains get refueled? ›

Most of the time they are refueled when at a yard or maintenance depot. But they can be field fueled trackside if needed. Large railroads will have their own fueling facilities at strategic points on their franchise.

How long can a train go before refueling? ›

With the introduction of tenders (a special car containing water and fuel), trains could run 100–150 miles (160–240 km) without a refill.

How far can a train go on 1 gallon of fuel? ›

Today's train locomotives are already quite fuel efficient, especially compared to trucks. In fact, trains can haul one ton of goods an average of more than 480 miles on just a single gallon of fuel, making them 3-4 times more fuel efficient than trucks.

Why are diesel trains never turned off? ›

Massive diesel engines will burn more fuel starting than they will idling for the better part of a day. If not intended to be shut down for more than 12 hours it is more fuel and money efficient to leave some massive engines idling. Other answers give some practical operational reasons to keep the engines running.

How big is the fuel tank on a train engine? ›

A locomotive fuel tank quantity(size) varies with the locomotive and whether it is a diesel or steam locomotive. Small diesel locos can be around 50 gallons for the tank. Large 4000 to 6000 HP mainline freight locos will usually have a 4000 to 5000 gallon fuel tank under the frame between the power trucks.

What is the average cost of a diesel locomotive? ›

Ever check out the list prices of brand-new main line diesel-electric locomotives? They are expensive, about $3 million each.

What is the average horsepower of a diesel locomotive? ›

While the average car engine has about 200 horsepower, locomotive engines typically range from 2,000 to 4,500 horsepower. Train operators rely on diesel power across the full range of rail power applications.

Could a tornado pick up a train? ›

EF3: A tornado becomes EF3 when the wind speed reaches 136–165 mph. With this power, the tornado can blow structures away and overturn trains.

How do trains fill up with fuel? ›

Most commonly in North America the engines are fueled as part of their hostling, between assigned trains. Longer-distance routes have trackside fueling points — probably the closest thing metaphorically to 'gas stations'.

How big is the fuel tank on a locomotive?

Where is the fuel stored in a locomotive? ›

locomotive fuel is stored at high pressures (>250 atmospheres) and ambient temperatures in cylinders. These cylinders are carried either on the locomotive or on a tender behind the locomotive. diesel fuel (dual-fuel operation).

What is the fuel for the locomotive? ›

Diesel-Powered Trains: Diesel locomotives are commonly used in many rail systems. On average, a typical freight diesel locomotive can consume 3 to 5 gallons of diesel fuel per mile. Passenger diesel trains might have slightly lower fuel consumption. Electric Trains: Electric trains rely on electricity rather than fuel.
