A couple of questions about refueling trains

  • Quote

Postby Rylant »

So I am to the point now where I have probably 50 or 60 trains running around. Most go from one station to pick something up and deliver it to another station, and then back to the load station. For fueling, I had small fuel stations at each station, which is now starting to become inconvenient.

I have now made a fairly large fuel making station which creates about 1000 rocket fuel per minute, all from coal. Right now, I have set it up so each train would pick up its product, deliver it, and then run to top off fuel at the fuel station, then back to its schedule. This doesn't seem efficient. So, my first question is. I typically use 2-6 trains. How long could a train this big go until it needs refueling if it is full at first with rocket fuel? Also, and more importantly, is there an easy way to set up so that my trains go about their pick up and deliver schedule, and only make a run to the fuel station when they are low on fuel?

Thanks,
Rylant

There's no way to make trains go to a fuel station when they get low on fuel, unfortunately. It's been suggested many times before.

This was a list of similar topics. now visible here.

I've found oil plentiful enough to put down a few pumpjacks, pipe oil to the train station and make the rocket fuel there. It only needs to be at one stop for each train.

Have a fuel-drop-off stop in at least one of the logistic nets each train visits regularly, put a rocket-fuel requester chest next to those regularly-visited stops in each of those nets, and you're done, problem solved.

How 'centralized' is your rail network? That is to say: do most of your trains go to one general area? Or are things more 'distributed', with trains running between a bunch of different factory blocks?

If it is fairly centralized, you can probably handle most refueling needs at whatever location most of your trains go to (e.g. classic example of this case is a central main base fed via trains by numerous mining outposts; refueling this setup is best done with fuel being distributed locally at your main base to every unload station, so that every train is 'topped off' on fuel every time it comes to unload at your main base).

If it is decentralized, then you need some means of distributing fuel to the various outposts where it is needed. A clever way of achieving this, is to have each of your trains have an extra wagon, which exists solely to carry (Rocket) fuel. The idea is to use your extant rail network to also distribute your fuel for you. At each station, the the fuel wagon is unloaded and routed to fueling the other stops that service the same factory block. The optimal way to do this is to start from your Rocket fuel production site and work backwards through your rail network, modifying existing trains to also carry fuel as need until every train visits an outpost that is being served fuel by one of its trains (if you have more than one to choose from, always choose the one that will run the most often to ensure that fuel won't ever run out provided your production is keeping up). The main downside to this approach is that it means buffering a lot of fuel if you want to ensure that the system can handle a temporary shortage anywhere in the network.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I see that there are a couple of mods which add fueling stations and make it so the train can add one of them when it is low in fuel, which will allow it to stop at the refuel depot. Has anybody tried any of these? I may try them tonight.

If you're still looking for an answer, why not a fuel train with a stop at each station, that unloads a small amount of fuel and then moves on. One car holds a LOT of fuel.

Prior to LTN I've made sure every train has at least one station providing fuel in its schedule.

The ore trains bring ore to the smelters, which naturally have fuel (prior to electrical furnaces late in the game). So all the smelters also refuel the ore trains. Similar all the trains delivering plates from the smelter also get fuel at the smelter. That's probably the biggest chunk of trains already covered.

For ther rest there are 3 options:

1) the train stop is near somewhere that already has fuel so just pull over a belt full or fuel and refuel the train
2) add a train stop "Fuel out" that is only enabled when the buffer chests are < 100. From the buffer chest refuel the regular train.
Note: Have one train parked at "Fuel in" waiting for inventory full and go to "Fuel out" waiting for inventory empty or inactivity. Refuel at "Fuel in". The train will only deliver fuel when any of the "Fuel out" stations runs low. One train is enough for hundreds of stations.
3) add a "Refuel" stop to the trains schedule. Make sure the refule stop(s) have plenty of waiting bays and enough throuput. You don't want this to be your bottleneck. Having multiple stations at different places so trains don't all need to cross some central nexus is a good idea. But you want the "Refuel" stop(s) to be somewhat central to all the trains that go there.

Usualy I use 1 or 2. But if you have satelite factories, e.g. an off site science production, then putting an extra "Refuel" stop at the entry/exit of the satelite factory is a good plan. The trains will pass there anyway and the little stop to add 3 rocket fuels takes little time.

A couple of questions about refueling trains (2024)

FAQs

How far can a train go without refueling? ›

Today's train locomotives are already quite fuel efficient, especially compared to trucks. In fact, trains can haul one ton of goods an average of more than 480 miles on just a single gallon of fuel, making them 3-4 times more fuel efficient than trucks.

How do they refuel trains? ›

Most commonly in North America the engines are fueled as part of their hostling, between assigned trains. Longer-distance routes have trackside fueling points — probably the closest thing metaphorically to 'gas stations'.

How often do trains refuel? ›

The locomotives hold roughly 1800 gallons, and are fueled every day they're in service. Trains that spend the night at outlying points are fueled mid day.

Do you put gas in a train? ›

Trains typically use a specific type of diesel fuel known as "diesel locomotive fuel" or "locomotive diesel." This diesel fuel is formulated to meet the specific requirements of diesel locomotive engines and the demands of the rail industry.

What do trains use for fuel? ›

Freight and passenger rail rely almost exclusively on diesel power. The latest diesel innovations contribute to cleaner air and reaching climate goals. New battery electric and hydrogen options are under development.

Where do trains fill up with fuel? ›

In the United States, diesel-electric locomotives are usually fueled in one of three manners: at an engine terminal, at fueling terminals along busy mainlines, and by fuel trucks wherever a fuel truck can get to a locomotive at.

Do trains use more gas than cars? ›

Another reason why railroad transport is better than road travel is the fuel efficiency they offer compared to hiring vehicles. Railways can consume up to nine times less fuel for every ton they carry for a kilometer, making trucks fuel inefficient compared to railroad transport.

How much fuel does a train hold? ›

Fuel Tank. This huge tank in the underbelly of the locomotive holds up to 5,500 gallons (20,820 liters) of diesel fuel, plus an additional 300 gallons (1,135 liters) of coolant, and 250 gallons (946 liters) of engine oil.

How many miles can a train go on a tank of fuel? ›

Similarly, a typical train might haul 3,000 tons of freight 500 miles and consume approximately 2,964 gallons of diesel fuel. The efficiency of this freight haul would be calculated as: (3000 tons x 500 miles) / (2,964 gallons) = 506 ton-miles per gallon.

How big is a train fuel tank? ›

A locomotive fuel tank quantity(size) varies with the locomotive and whether it is a diesel or steam locomotive. Small diesel locos can be around 50 gallons for the tank. Large 4000 to 6000 HP mainline freight locos will usually have a 4000 to 5000 gallon fuel tank under the frame between the power trucks.

Which oil is used in trains? ›

The diesel oil fuels an engine which in turn powers a large electrical generator. The produced electricity powers an electric motor, which turns the locomotive drive wheels. So in reality, all modern train locomotives are powered by electricity.

What's in the black tank on trains? ›

A tank car can carry compressed or liquid commodities, like chemicals, molasses, edible tallow, water, diesel fuel and ethanol. Many chemicals, including ethanol, are considered hazardous materials.

How many miles can a train go on one tank of gas? ›

Much depends on the loco type/class/load, I'm sure, since answers range from 7 to 22 hours and 550 to 1650 miles. (Those work out to about . 4 miles per gallon, which is actually a -lot- more than I would have guessed!)

Can trains run out of fuel? ›

While this situation would be rare, it can and does happen. It's happened to me several times so far in my railroad career.

Is there a limit to how long a freight train can be? ›

Last Updated: March 2024 AAR.org/train-length There is no standard definition of a “long train.” Recent legislation defines a long train as 7,500 feet, and railroads have operated millions of trains exceeding that length without incident or notice for the past 80 years.

How far can a train go on one gallon of diesel? ›

(19 tons x 500 miles) / 71 gallons = 134 ton-miles per gallon.
