moderate. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. and berkeley police are investigating a hate crime after a family-run coffee shop was vandalized 4 times in just one month. the coffee shop is inspired by their palestinian american roots. kron 4 sarah stinson has more details after speaking with the 3 for other owners about the vandalism. >>vandalism was caught on video. you can see it here behind me. the owners of joffe a coffee roasters say this is the same vandal has been targeting their free palestine sign. inspired by their palestinian roots and love for fresh brew. 3 brothers from the north bay quit their 95 jobs to open a coffee shop in berkeley. joffe a coffee roasters opened their doors in june on university avenue and here maggi nor and their brother sami gas roast their own coffee beans, fake their

own pastries and make each cup and experience. they say they poured their heart and soul into their business and it's been a dream come true. >>up until a vandal deface their free palestine sign in the front window. this is happened 4 times. yes, by the same person. it was the 4th time that pushed them to reported after the person crossed out palestine and wrote free here. a lot of the community members themselves said like you have report at this time, it's something that we actually agreed with. >>when you write free here and there's kids walking by others, religious institutions and schools all around us. that's just completely completely unacceptable. berkley police are investigating this as a hate crime. this is not going to stop us from serving coffee from. >>being an existing as palestinians and believing in a free palestine. this is personal for these brothers. their parents immigrated from palestine more than 40 years ago and started a new chapter in napa. and our parents are everything to us. and so they've been the number one

11:34 pm

supporters for be stealing with this hate crime or just sort of opening doors. we have about 2000 family members back in the west bank, an old city in jerusalem and they live under occupation with minimal rights. maggi says overall since opening they've had a lot more support than hate are just general fans of are. >>coffee selection and just the way treat people with love and care. and so for this to happen, yes, it's unfortunately a roadblock or sort of a temporary staying, but it definitely is outweighed by the outpouring of love from our community. >>berkley police are still investigating this. the owners are confident the vandal will be caught. may look forward to many more years serving up their unique blends of coffee. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >>and same old tired playbook. next question, please. that's it. that's it. ok, let's talk about some foreign policy issues that would be on your

plate if you become commander. vice president harris brushes off trump's recent comments about her raised during her interview on cnn. >>it was the hairs was campaign's first primetime interview since becoming the democratic nominees for president and vice president. whilst address questions about his military service. while harris shared her day, one priorities and attempted to clarify her policy positions in the past. harris has vocally supported a ban on fracking has been quiet on the matter as of late tonight, she said values have not changed. but as president, she would not ban fracking. political science professor at sonoma state david mcewan said harris does well with personal questions but needs to improve when it comes to her delivery on our policy. if she wants to change the minds of undecided voters, the inflation reduction act about the issue of fracking as much as it about the issue of changing your position. there's lots of different ways you can handle this. you could i'm learning a lot matured. >>and like everyone in the

11:36 pm

last 4 years, i'm growth and instead she talked about her values which record holding on to that. >>in my view, that's talking to the faithful. you have to convert some will of voters because we know that this race is neck and neck right now. they're running like a based campaign and talking to that base. that was last week. now you have to talk to swing voters and that means that you have to correlate your values with growth. >>mcewan said harris was smart to not mention her opponent and instead focus on bipartisanship. she also said as president, she would appoint a republican to her cabinet which mckeown says show she's looking beyond the normal divides. however, he feels she has some work to over the next 2 months. >>is a lot better and she's learning and you can see that. but there's still these moments where she she gets a little bit weaker of answering the question about policy specifics. but in terms of reaching across the aisle and understanding the higher level argument about what she wants to do and where she thinks the

11:37 pm

country is that that's very important. >>harris has less time to convince voters than any other presidential candidate in modern history. killing goes on to say the overall tonight's interview is a flash in the pan compared to the debate coming up on september 10th. now let's switch gears to get a check on the weather for that. we turn to kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow giving us a look ahead at your holiday weekend. forecast, lawrence. >>we've got some clouds that are moving in right now. fog, some or fog sliding on by making his way inside the bay help to cool down the temperatures today. numbers backed off quite a bit, especially inland. remember yesterday dropped along the coastline. but finally, that cool air starting to reach some of the valley. so it was 10 degrees cooler in fairfield, 9 degrees cooler in santa rosa. 8 degrees. cooler and both conquered and also into livermore. and we're gonna see that trend continue in the next couple days. highs touched off to 67 in san francisco just slightly below the average 72 in oakland, 83

11:38 pm

degrees in san jose. much more reasonable. 87 in livermore. 86 in concord in eighty-four degrees in santa rosa. so tomorrow, yeah, we start out with a lot of clouds early on. i think mostly cloudy skies to start slowly peeling back live in a really nice, big day behind in san jose about 82 degrees and sunny and warm in the afternoon. beautiful 76 after that fog peels away in oakland, 65 degrees in san francisco. next few days getting into the holiday weekend. here we go. we're gonna watch those temperatures dropping off more clouds on the way and a slower burn off. and that means those temperatures likely running a little bit below the average over the holiday weekend. >>thousands of hotel workers across the bay area could soon be walking off the job. the possible strike comes after months of failed negotiations with marriott, hyatt and hilton hotels are large group of workers picketed outside hotels in san francisco today.

11:39 pm

workers say they want better wages benefits. and most of all, consistent working hours. >>enough job. but this do have a i only want they. 2. they they obey d. i hope i when hour. >>the workers contract expired earlier this month and they did not say exactly when they will go on strike, but it really can happen any day. now. coming up, charges dropped against a man accused of murdering an oakland police officer and san francisco plans to set out here. john letters will hear more on the legal woes. some bay area cities are facing with kron. 4 legal analyst michael cardoza. >>in just a couple of minutes.

11:41 pm

11:42 pm

a lot of courtroom developments across the bay area this week. for more on this kron four's grant lotus and vicki liviakis socal kron four's legal analyst michael cardoza. >>the first thing we want to get to is the police officer who is killed 20 lady oakland officer several months ago now, but we're still working through the legal process and one of suspects had all charges against him dropped. so the question is this, you know, police officers union is saying they're concerned about this development. you do still have 3 suspects facing charges of. but there's the poe have a right to be concerned about this latest development. they certainly i haven't heard explanation public a given for why there was a dismiss or hasn't been right. so why is number one?

11:43 pm

>>and then this a while it's under investigation. still, okay. fair enough. but the bottom line here as and most counties in california, the da's office and the police departments and the sheriff department's work hand in hand. they trust each other and alameda county. that's really different. they the police departments and sheriff's office really don't have faith in this da's office to win it. the district attorney. so when she does something, they wonder, well, wait a minute, what's going on here? and that's why they're raising up and saying, wait, you have to explain to us why your dumping this case, why you're not continuing with it. and what do you mean further investigation? what more do you need? so the big problem alameda is that faith where department's work with the da's office. and when the da says, look, i'm just messing here's why. and then if they disagree, fair enough. but the

11:44 pm

da has a right to do that. but should have a good enough relationship with the police department, which doesn't exist. there. so therefore, they raise up to this makes sense. all right. the next one i know you're chomping at the bit to talk about that. >>salman this city and county of francisco planning to send out dear john people thought to be engaging solicitation of prostitution. it's gotten so bad because certain age or workers now. >>as not cross today, which is interesting. but that being said. >>it's really interesting not been around long enough. i'll give you a little san francisco history back in the early 70's, there was a group called coyote was just call off your old tire ethics they were run by a woman and margot same so was a worker and it was sort of a coalition are our union of workers. and in

11:45 pm

those days they actually da's offices actually took those cases to trial. and the big defense, of course, was, well, it's a victimless crime and it was difficult at times to get convictions. so you don't see. da's office says bringing cases against workers. so what they're doing now as go ahead? well, the people are the they're suing the city. the miners are fed up. i mean, >>i'm going to take a quote here, having ons and women skimpy clothes walking around her neighborhood is not what we want to see. yeah, i'll tell you what they used to do. you know, once it's there, it started jurors, you know, you do as one or 2 or 3 victimless crime. i'm never convicting. so da's office says back then said, well, wasting time doing so what the police used to do, don't know if they're still doing but they start arresting workers and they put him in jail for the night. and if they come back the next night, arrest them again and so on. so it affects their ability to

11:46 pm

make money and you don't have to prosecute them because they're making legal or oust. so you basically put them out of work this time. the city's taking pressure, putting pressure on the johns right and getting that what have imagine telling your excuse me there wind. you've got a dear john letter. so what they're doing is putting pressure on to say, hey, you want your wife to know you want your girlfriend to know what you're doing and that's how they start stopping that baidu. that's a smart move. you know, you guys go out there and do it. we're going to stop so we should say this isn't all over the city. the snow, the mission continues to be captured. now it's shot. well shot final topic. there's >>bay area swimmers been arrested, accused molesting several children. i don't mean to laugh at 25 year-old he's in santa rita jail in dublin. but his attorney asked for him to be released because they said he is lactose intolerant and they've been giving in derry. have you ever heard of something like this live heard of it before, but never going into court.

11:47 pm

>>and saying she let him out judging, by the way, his parents live back where missouri, mississippi. so why don't you just let him out? will send a move there? and i said the other day on the air, i said there's no way a court's going to do this. you know, no way you're going to take someone accused of molesting children and let them out because they're lactose intolerance and they didn't. then they did. said not. all well, i take care of his dietary needs well. all right. all right, thank you very much, joel, always great to have you. thursday kicked of

11:51 pm

planning ahead for parking checking in on your smartphone, keeping all liquids under 3.4 ounces and remember having radio to tsa and of course, be mindful. the mccormick family is heading to colorado with a little one and says they're always mindful. but unfortunately all of that that's really wants to take a jolly jared from san jose airport says to help ease some people's moods. its national aviation weeks. weeks takes that after getting through tsa. will everyone can get in on some games and prizes throughout the terminal. and this is and this celebration of our 75th anniversary earlier this year there will be maybe chicken themed games and prizes. so no matter where you're heading, just remember, be on time. be kind. and as us news, people always say pack those patients. that's the very latest here in the south bay. i'm michael thomas. i'll send it back to you live in the studio. >>a new effort to clean up one of the san jose's lakes is getting underway as kron. 4 charles clifford tells us the city has just secured a federal grant to get things

11:52 pm

started. >>well, right now i'm standing in lake cunningham, regional park. it's a really popular spot for people. just want to go for a walk. the caliber a water park is here. but the one thing that's not used by anyone is the actual lake cunningham itself. now, since the 1990's, the water quality here has really degraded. and there's a lack of filtration invasive species. waters become very murky. you're not allowed to swim here or fish. we're really do any recreation on the water now hoping to change that and clean up the lake. representative jimmy panetta from this area has secured $850,000 in federal funding to launch a cleanup effort to hopefully one day restore recreational use here. this will be. >>a park will put people will continue to come to connect with nature with each other. and with this community. >>because restoring this park is more than just revitalizing the lake. it's about investing in our children's future, ensuring that they have the same opportunities for joy learning and connection that i

11:53 pm

once did at this park. now, in addition to cleaning up the lake, the city also says that they have a lot of money in the city's budget. >>to start remodeling and improving the bathrooms here at lake cunningham, regional park. but for now in the south bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news.

multi-agency investigation and take down has led to the arrests of more than a dozen oakland gang members. police say they are responsible burglarizing marijuana dispensaries up and down the state kron four's. dan kerman has the details. >>you're looking at some 50 pounds of cannabis as well as cash and other items seized by a multi-agency task force

11:56 pm

charged with taking down an organized retail crime operation targeting pot dispensaries. >>over the cease-fire investigation, investigators found that the group was involved in nearly 2 dozen commercial burglaries. with over 2 dozen active criminal participants. >>though the burglaries took place across the state including stores in sonoma, santa cruz and monterey counties. more than half of the 22 arrested are gang members from the city of oakland. this. >>a criminal enterprise, if you will, comes the number of games, chemistry games that we saw working in collaboration in order to commit these crimes. >>the oakland police department cease-fire unit worked alongside the california department of justice and the santa cruz county sheriff's office during the 5 month investigation. and oakland police say the take down resulted in more than just pot. there were a number of weapons that were recovered at least 17 on the day of the take now. so we know that these individuals

11:57 pm

>>involved in weapons, possessions, weapons trafficking. there are some that have ties to auto thefts, carjackings, and even a felonious assaults which include shootings. >>this is a when not for again, calling for oakland, not only for the alameda county, well, for the whole state of california. >>oakland mayor sheng thao claimed responsibility for resurrecting oakland cease-fire. crime fighting strategy and said it's clearly paying off. >>if you commit a crime. you may not be caught today. you may not be caught tomorrow. you may not be cut this week. what we are working day in and day out to ensure that we bring those who commit crime against our communities to justice. >>dan kerman kron. 4 news. >>a restaurant in the castro district of san francisco is pleading for help. his business was broken into for the 8th time in recent years. kron four's gayle ong has his concerns.

11:58 pm

>>overnight security cameras at guy chicken and rice capturing a man breaking and entering the restarant. >>they just kick through 8. we're not through it and then find through this owner kevin lewis showing us the aftermath at 03:00am in the morning. like you're in deep sleep, you're in a very comfortable state. and that's just the shock of like, oh, my god, what's going on? is it just a what has happened like and you have to like run down here to store to see what's going according to san francisco police officers arrived around 3.40 thursday morning. no suspect was found. the restaurant is located on 16th street near sanchez street in the castro district. kron. 4 has interviewed lou over the years about multiple break-ins. >>at least 8 incidents and counting since the business opened 6 years ago. i follow the news and i see that happening to other businesses out there. >>it it's scary to think like,

11:59 pm

wow, it's it's my experience is real. >>and i'm not the only one crime data from the san francisco police department shows the mission street station which covers this neighborhood shows burglaries are up by 15% since january. 1st, citywide crime is overall down. crime might be lower based on some some stats. but it's still at least from my personal experience. and it's very hard to deal loose as the cost to repair these windows are around $2000 costs that add up, there's election coming. i think pro safety. i think we're going to be making a call on, you know what, what makes us feel safe so that we feel at home. >>and the restaurant owner says he has thought about

12:01 am

12:02 am

>>we turn now to the city of oakland where topics like school safety, law enforcement, staffing and public safety are all top of mind for many residents following recent headlines. for more on all of that scrum for stephanie lynn spoke with mayor sheng thao somare. we'd like to start with the fatal shooting case of all oakland police officer it one way. alameda county prosecutors. they announced just yesterday that they dropped all the charges against one of the 4 suspects arrested in connection with officer lay's death. >>and this comes after a judge also dropped the murder case against the suspect as well, saying that prosecutors failed

12:03 am

to prove. but this person was a major participant in the shooting. do you think that justice was served here? >>you know, i can speak on what evidence they were utilizing or their rationale behind dropping the charges. however, what i can say is that there has to be a cost 2 terrorizing the community. there has to be a cost to shooting and killing and murdering one of our police officers. so with that being said, you know, again, i don't know the details of their why for the charges to be dropped. but there must be a cost for this kind of behavior. >>okay. we'll get to the issue of public safety in just a moment here. but we'd like to turn also to the topic of back-to-school season. it was revealed, of course, that water at some oakland unified school campuses did test positive for lead specifically nearly 200 water phones showing elevated lead levels and the district knew about this issue as far back as april but failed to inform parents and teachers until now. so mayor, as a parent yourself, what is your reaction to this and have you spoken with the district on why so many families were left

12:04 am

in the dark? >>yeah, you just as a reminder, the city of oakland, we do not have jurisdiction over our schools. however, this is very disheartening, right to hear that our kids, we're going to school thinking that, you know, the water that they're trudging from from the water fountain is safe. there's an assumption there is. so for me, i have reached out to the district. i'm going to do whatever i can to work with the county, which the public health department and the district to ensure that, you know, the basic necessities are given sarah kids where we know that they're going to be safe, whether it's their drinking it, whether it's making sure that they are safe on campus physically. >>in your conversations with district officials, have they provided any explanation in terms of why they? failed to properly inform students families about this lead issue. >>you know, i think that that's a really great question to ask them around their why right now, i'm really hyper focus on working towards a

12:05 am

solution id. it's my understanding that fix for the pipes, it's going to take about 40 million dollars. and so we're looking to see how we can move forward and ensure again that our kids are going to school and given the basic necessities of safety. and that includes drinking water. >>also like to ask you about the recent incident involving the motorcyclist that took over city streets in oakland and the bay bridge on sunday. we saw footage of these folks harassing drivers causing some property damage, even breaking into a convenience store. and we know you've been hosting town halls specific to public safety. so could you speak to what's being done to address an issue like this? >>multiple different things are being done to address issues such as this rate. i think that what we have here is a culmination of a culture leading up to today, right over many years now where there was no enforcement. and so this is the exact reason why under my administration, we brought that the traffic

12:06 am

patrol officers, those who are on motorcycles so that we can actually tackle this issue again, we know that this group has come from not was not only in oakland, but they've got to san francisco or in other cities to rising their streets and still coming together and having these flock cameras that we discuss where we're going to receive 290 flock cameras in the city of oakland in full over 400 cameras across the east bay region is going to extremely helpful for us to be able to in real time track detractors like u.s. so that we can really hone in and work inter agency wise apprehend as many of these bad actors as possible. you know, committing, you know, to stopping traffic on the bay bridge is unacceptable. it's an example. it's not safe, you know, going around mobs of dirt bikes or what have you and going into our businesses and harassing them. that is unacceptable. and we will not tolerate it anymore. all again, this is a culmination

12:07 am

of somewhat. it seems like a de facto culture that chan's transition into all these many years now under this administration. we're taking a full-on force in regards to we're not taking any of the city more. you know, if you come to the city of oakland, there will be consequences. >>you know, pd, of course, we also know faces a chronic under staffing issue. are there plans to higher up for? is there a timeline for that sort of thing to fill those empty spots? >>well, actually, right now, all of our funded positions are completely filled. we actually have more police officers than what we've actually funded for, right. but although we have that, we do know that there's a transition generational transition of a lot of our officers retiring. and so we're doing ongoing basis. we're running one kathy right now. currently we're going to run another academy. we're going to continue to run these academies to fill in the vacancies that will open at due to retirement. and so again, right now, we're actually at full capacity were actually over that capacity from the positions. but i get

12:08 am

it. i don't think we have enough police officers in this is why we have to create new streams of revenue. oakland is known for not being innovative enough to create new streams of revenue tax revenues without going to property owners to tax them over and over. but these new streams of revenue are incredibly important so that we can fund more police officers rate is. so that's exactly why we're working on the coliseum to sell that and get the full hegenberger corridor developed so that we can start seeing those tax dollars come in and that we can start paying for more officers. >>all right. and as we start to wrap things up here, we like to check in with you on the issue of homelessness in oakland. the last time we spoke with you about this issue to you described it in your words as a whac-a-mole situation with these encampment sweeps. do you see homelessness as a situation that can only be managed versus something that can actually be solved? >>i'll be very honest you right now. it is only

12:09 am

something that we can manage because we need to be able to get the federal government and the state government to actually implement the permanent supportive housing stock that we don't currently have right now. so under the reagan administration, you know, we saw that all of your mental health facilities have all been depleted and taken down. and so we know that the majority of the people who are living on our streets cannot live on their own or pay rent or even hold a job. and so without that missing middle piece of permanent supportive housing, you'll see that it'll be just displacing people, getting people to shelter for a moment. they'll come back out. it's a cycle. and so until we have it all these permanent supportive housing and supportive housing, stood up. this is going to be whac-a-mole. but here in the city of oakland, we've been doing the work. we've been doing the work to take down encampments. and this is our charge. i have charged. our city sat if people are on the sidewalk, they've got to if people are in our parks, they've got to go because this is a danger to the most

12:10 am

vulnerable population, which is our kids, our kids, our seniors, 88 people who are in wheelchairs that need to utilize the sidewalks. and so what you'll start seeing or actually we body already started this process is that there's going to be aggressive approach on getting people off of the sidewalks out and around of our parks in or near our schools are rec centers. got it a case. you mention that oakland has this lack of permanent supportive housing. >>we understand that oakland is one of the 20 california cities to be awarded funding to build some more sustainable home, some more affordable housing. so. >>you know, how soon can we see some of those buildings start to, you know, come into fruition, helping with addressing the homeless issue in oakland. >>so we see a lot of affordable housing go up. but the permanent supportive housing is different. we're putting under my mission, ripken, 200 million dollars towards affordable and deeply affordable housing. just last week we want from the state a grant for 44 million dollars

12:11 am

in partnership with the black culture and even housing to build over 100 affordable units in district 6, which is in east oakland. however, that's different than the per permit supportive housing, affordable housing and deeply for will housing. these are for families that you know, can actually hold on to housing. can can ensure that, you know, they are taking their kids to and all of that stuff. but the permanent supportive housing is mainly for those who are not mentally capable or physically capable of actually supporting themselves and making sure that they are healthy and safe. and so there are 2 very different aspects, but we are building out many affordable housing, including on the site of the formerly known wood street parcel where there were thousands of homeless people, which my administration broke down that encampment and now over 100 units of affordable housing is sitting on that >>alright, certainly lots more to unpack but we'll have to continue that in our next conversation. thank you so much, oakland mayor sheng thao for your time this afternoon.

inside the bay. you've got real dense fog. you've got some high level fog and that means it's going to be able penetrate over the hills of the east bay. so tomorrow morning we're waking up to a lot of cloud cover for everybody and then partial clearing as we head toward the afternoon promise lingering fog along the coastline. but much cooler weather is on the way for the weekend forecast overnight. tonight. you see the model's picking on some of that fog surging not only inside the bay you see the tri valley into the delta as well because surge overnight tonight and early tomorrow, but then pulling back along the coastline see a couple patches lingering out toward the beaches. we get ready for the following day and the weekend ahead. but here comes this area of low pressure after high pressure, but some hot temperatures, the bay area this week. now you start to see a southwesterly flow beginning to develop. that is going to be a cooling flow of high of low pressure. that means a lot cooler temperatures, especially for those interior valleys that w're doing with some temperatures near 100 degrees this week. it'll be broadly reaching the mid 80's. the warmer spots there. all right. tomorrow we're looking at numbers in san francisco, mainly in the 60's by tomorrow afternoon with some partly
